Nischal Basnet was born on January 17, 1980, in Kathmandu, Nepal. He completed his primary education in Jhapa and pursued higher secondary education in Mussoorie, India. Later, he traveled to Australia for further studies but returned to Nepal, where he enrolled at Oscar International College of Film Studies, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Film Studies.


Career

Nischal Basnet made a groundbreaking entry into Nepali cinema with his directorial debut Loot in 2012. The film became a cult classic and is credited with revitalizing the Nepali film industry by introducing realistic storytelling and dark humor.

Following the success of Loot, Basnet directed Talakjung vs Tulke (2014), a dark comedy set during the Nepalese Civil War. The film received critical acclaim and was Nepal’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards.

In 2017, he directed Loot 2, the sequel to his debut film, which also achieved commercial success. As an actor, Basnet has appeared in several notable films, including Kabaddi (2014), Dui Rupaiyan (2017), Prasad (2018), Ghamad Shere (2019), Agastya: Chapter 1 (2024), and Behuli from Meghauli (2024).
